Three reasons the HIV 1 (PCR) test is right for you
- This is the earliest HIV test available, accurate from just 10 days after potential exposure
- Uses highly sensitive PCR technology to detect HIV RNA in very small quantities
- Provides fast, reliable results to give you clarity and peace of mind
What is the HIV 1 (PCR) test?
The HIV 1 (PCR) test is the earliest possible test for detecting HIV infection. It can accurately identify HIV from as early as 10 days after a potential exposure, making it the most sensitive early detection option available.
This test detects the genetic material (RNA) of the virus itself, rather than waiting for your body to produce antibodies. This allows infection to be identified much sooner than standard antibody or antigen tests.
What situations may prompt this test?
You may wish to consider the HIV 1 (PCR) test if:
- You have had unprotected sex with a partner of unknown HIV status
- You have had a recent sexual encounter that you are concerned about
- You have experienced potential exposure through blood or needle contact
- You want the earliest and most accurate reassurance available
How does the HIV 1 (PCR) test work?
The test uses Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) technology to detect HIV RNA in your blood. PCR works by amplifying tiny amounts of viral genetic material so that they can be identified by the laboratory, even at very low levels.
A blood sample is required for this test. At your private appointment, a qualified nurse or clinician will collect the sample and send it to our accredited laboratory for analysis.
What can I expect at my appointment?
Your appointment will involve a simple blood draw from your arm. The process is quick, safe, and usually takes only a few minutes.
Once your sample has been analysed, your results will be uploaded to your secure online Patient Area. You will receive an SMS or email notification when your results are ready, and you can log in at any time to check your status.
Will I have a bad reaction to the test?
This is a routine blood test and is very safe. Most people experience only mild discomfort at the time of the blood draw.
You may notice slight bruising or tenderness at the needle site, but serious complications are extremely rare.
