Why do I have to wait a few days to get an STI test?

Most STIs take a few days before they can be accurately detected with laboratory tests.  The exact time depends on the testing method and the STI you choose.  The time starts from when you were potentially exposed (this could be when you had sex, or a blood injury) and ends at the time your sample is collected.  This period is called your incubation period.

For example HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C can all be accurately tested at 10 days with PCR testing.  This test is more expensive than the 28 day tests for Hepatitis B (which is a surface Antigen test) and HIV (antigen and antibody test).
