What is a quantitative Human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) test?
A human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) quantitative test will measure the amount of hCG in a person's blood. hCG is a hormone produced during pregnancy making this test an excellent indicator of pregnancy. Human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) is made by the placenta of a pregnant woman. hCG starts to be produced only a few days (5-7) after the egg is fertilised.
The hCG hormone plays an important role during the first few weeks of pregnancy in maintaining the correct function of the corpus luteum. The corpus luteum is a small mass of tissue that fills the space left behind by the released egg. This tissue is absorbed and reduced in size if the egg is not fertilised but remains and produces another hormone called progesterone if the egg has been fertilised successfully.
Human chorionic gonadotrophin will continue to be produced during the first three months of pregnancy and will reach its highest levels around 1o weeks after the last menstrual cycle. Levels of hCG will then reduce slowly during the remainder of the pregnancy and will no longer be detectable within a few weeks following delivery of the baby.

What will my hCG test results mean?
Your hCG test results will tell you if you are pregnant or not, if your pregnancy is progressing normally and if there are any reasons to be concerned about either your health of that of the developing foetus.
In healthy women who are not pregnant, hCG levels are usually less than 5IU/L. When a woman is pregnant, hCG levels are usually above 25 IU/L. If levels between 5IU/L and 25IU/L are detected, you should consult with a doctor and seek advice on your status.
