What is a Cortisol Test?
Cortisol is often referred to as the stress hormone because of its role in the body’s stress response. As your body reacts to stress it releases the hormone cortisol into your bloodstream via your adrenal glands. A blood sample is used to analyse the levels of cortisol in the body.
Why consider a cortisol test?
If you are feeling particularly anxious, stressed or irritable then you should consider a cortisol test. When you are under constant stress, your body can experience long-term exposure to cortisol and other stress hormones, increasing your risk of many health issues including heart disease, obesity, anxiety and depressions.
Cortisol levels can also be used to diagnose potential disorders of the adrenal glands which can develop into more serious conditions. For example, Cushing’s syndrome can be caused by an over production of cortisol whereas Addison’s disease is the underproduction.
Symptoms of excessive Cortisol can include:
Obesity, mainly around the torso
High blood sugar
High blood pressure
Red and swollen face
Muscle weakness
Symptoms of low levels of Cortisol can include:
Weight loss and loss of appetite
Fatigue
Muscle weakness
Low blood pressure
Nausea and vomiting
How does this test work?
Your cortisol home testing kit will contain everything you need to collect your sample, including a pre-paid envelope for returning your sample to our accredited laboratory for analysis.
Reference ranges for Cortisol are for a sample taken between 6.00 am and 10.00 am, and at midnight. Cortisol levels are higher when you first wake up and then fall steadily during the day. It is suggested that you collect your sample at these times if you want to compare it to the reference range.
When will my test kit arrive?
If you place your order before 4pm, Monday - Friday, your kit will be dispatched on the same day by first class post. You should receive your kit the next working day, depending on where you live.
