Product Information

What is prolactin?

Prolactin is a hormone made by the pituitary gland in the brain and is responsible for encouraging breast milk production after childbirth. Both men and non-pregnant women possess low levels of prolactin. As well as pregnancy, high levels of prolactin are also associated with a type of tumour called prolactinoma, which can be found in the pituitary gland.

Prolactinomas are usually benign but can cause:

  • Breast milk production in men and non-pregnant women

  • Visual disturbances and headaches (pressure on the optic nerve from the expanding tumour)

  • Infertility

  • Loss of sex drive

  • Irregular periods

  • Erectile dysfunction (suppression of sex hormone production by the pituitary gland from the growing tumour)

Why should I consider a prolactin test?

If you are suffering from any of the symptoms above, then you should consider Better2Know's prolactin test. Even though prolactinomas are usually benign, their unchecked growth may cause permanent damage to surrounding tissue if left undiagnosed and untreated.

How is prolactin tested?

Our prolactin test will require you to provide a blood sample. Once we have collected your sample it will be sent for swift and accurate analysis at Better2Know's accredited laboratory.

How will I receive my test results?

You will be able to view your test results as early as one working day following your samples arrival at our lab. Our experienced Patient Services team will notify you when your results are ready. You can view your results in your secure patient area as soon as they become available.

What should I do with my results?

If your prolactin test results show elevated quantities of prolactin in your system, you should organise an appointment with a doctor to talk about your results. Better2Know can organise a private consultation with one of our skilled doctors in the country. In the consultation, your doctor will talk through your results and recommend appropriate next steps.
