You can catch this infection from wading or washing in dirty fresh water such as ponds, lakes, streams and canals and is common across Africa, South America, the Caribbean, the Middle East and Asia. The tiny worms burrow into your skin and enter your blood stream where they move around the body whilst laying eggs. The worms can affect your intestines and urinary tract, giving you abdominal pains, diarrhoea and blood in your stool and urine.
