What is Hepatitis B?

What are the symptoms of a Hepatitis B infection?

Some people will clear the virus naturally, but others can develop a long-term (chronic) infection which may lead to serious liver damage.

If you do experience symptoms, they are likely to include the following:

• Pain in the upper right side of your stomach

• Dark urine

• Pale coloured faeces

• Yellowing of the skin and/or the whites of the eyes (jaundice)

The Hepatitis B vaccine contains a small, non-infectious part of the Hepatitis B virus. This stimulates your immune system to produce antibodies that protect you against future Hepatitis B infection.

A single dose of the Hepatitis B vaccine starts building your protection. However, full long-term immunity usually requires further doses as part of a complete vaccination course. Your healthcare professional will advise you on the right schedule for you.

What can I expect at my Hepatitis B vaccine appointment?

At your appointment, your Hepatitis B vaccine will be administered into the top of your arm by a trained medical professional.

After your vaccine, you can return to your normal activities, though it is sensible to take it easy for the rest of the day. If this is the first dose in your course, you should make sure you book your follow-up doses to ensure full protection.

Will I have a bad reaction to the Hepatitis B vaccine?

Most people will not have any significant reactions to the Hepatitis B vaccine. Any side effects are usually mild and short-lived. Common reactions can include pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site, feeling tired, a mild fever, or headache.

Less commonly, some people may experience nausea, dizziness, or flu-like symptoms. Very rarely, a person may have a serious allergic reaction, which can cause swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, or a rapid heartbeat. If you notice any of these symptoms, seek medical help immediately.
