What are antibodies?
Antibodies are proteins produced in response to an infection. They combat infection and help protect the body against future re-infection. Antibodies combine chemically with substances which the body recognises as alien, such as bacteria, viruses, and foreign substances in the blood.
Why do you need to get tested?
Your result will show whether you have been exposed to Covid-19 previously and if you have produced antibodies in response, or that your body has produced antibodies in response to a Covid-19 vaccination. Regular testing means you can monitor any changes in your antibody levels over time.
What if you receive a positive Covid-19 antibody test result?
A positive result shows you have previously been infected with Covid-19, or you have been vaccinated against Covid-19 and that your immune system has produced Coronavirus specific antibodies in response. It is important to remember that you can still become re-infected and pass the virus on to others.
What are the reasons you may receive a negative result?
A negative result indicates your body has not produced Covid-19 antibodies, or that they are no longer detectable after a previous Covid-19 infection or vaccination.
It may be that you have never had Coronavirus, or you have had the vaccine and it was not effective. It could be possible that you had the vaccine, but you were tested too early for antibodies to be detected. You may have had Covid-19 and produced antibodies but they are no longer detectable, or you are currently infected, and your body has not yet begun to produce antibodies.
Alternatively, you may have had Covid-19 but other immune system factors may have aided your recovery instead. Therefore, with so many variables it is important to be regularly tested.
