What is Amylase?
Amylase is an enzyme that is released into the digestive tract to help digest starch in our food. It is produced by the salivary glands and pancreas. If there is too much or too little Amylase present in our blood it can indicate a problem with the pancreas.
Why consider an amylase pancreatic disorder test?
You should consider taking an amylase test if you are displaying any of the symptoms associated with a pancreatic disorder. Other health conditions can also be indicated by your amylase levels, including pancreatic cancer or gallstones.
Typical symptoms of a pancreatic disorder include:
Nausea
Vomiting
Severe abdominal pain
Loss of appetite
Fever
An amylase test is also recommended for people with cystic fibrosis, whose bodies can find it difficult to absorb nutrients from food, potentially causing thick mucus plugs that block digestive enzymes.
How does this test work?
The Better2Know Amylase Pancreatic Disorder test uses a blood sample. Your test kit will include everything that is needed for your sample to be successfully collected. A pre-paid envelope is included in your test kit to send your sample to our accredited laboratory. The results will then be ready within 2 working days of their arrival at the laboratory.
What tests will you run on my sample?
Your sample will be tested for the enzyme Amylase. The level of this Amylase in your blood will determine if there is a potential issue which you need to speak to your doctor about.
When will my test kit arrive?
If ordered before 4pm Monday-Friday, your test kit will be sent out that same day via first class post. You should receive your kit the following working day.
How will I receive my test results?
When your results are ready a member of our team will contact you directly through a method of your choosing (SMS, email or by phone). You can also access your results at any time once they are ready using your confidential log-in details for our secure patient platform.
What should I do with my results?
Better2Know can help you arrange a follow-up consultation with a private doctor in your local area for you to discuss your results further or you can meet with a GP. A doctor will be able to advise you if treatment is needed or be able to arrange additional testing.
