The University of New South Wales in Sydney is currently conducting the Gay Asian Men’s Survey (GAMS) for 2021. GAMS aims to survey Asian men who are members of the LGBTQ+ community in Australia, gathering information on their sexual health and well-being.
In recent years, there have been improvements in HIV transmission rates and other sexual health issues among men in Australia. However, this improvement is less visible among overseas-born gay men, and in particular, those from Asian backgrounds. Researchers hope that information collected through the survey can be used to improve and guide programmes that better cater to the needs of Asian men in the LGBTQ+ community.
Why is there a higher rate of HIV transmission and sexual health issues among Asian men in the LGBTQ+ community?
NSW Health data suggests that LGBTQ+ Asian men face obstacles to suitable HIV prevention messaging and treatment. Factors such as fear of disclosure, racism and stigma are barriers to sexual health services. In addition, visa precariousness, language barriers and fears of Medicare ineligibility further present as obstacles to HIV and STI testing and treatment.
Who can participate in the GAMS survey?
To participate in the survey, you must be:
- A man (or transgender person) 18 years old or over
- AND identify as Asian or of Asian background
- AND have had sex with men in the past five years
- AND be currently living in New South Wales, Australia.
