2022 is fast approaching and it is time to make those New Year resolutions and hopefully keep them. According to a YouGov survey, the top three resolutions made in 2020 interestingly were health related.

What do UK statistics show for 2019 and 2021?

In December 2019, 27% said they made New Year´s resolutions, dropping down to just a measly 12% for 2020.  Not surprisingly, the age group least interested in making resolutions were 65 plus year olds, with 6% in that age group compared to 24% of optimistic 18–24-year-olds in 2019.

How many people kept their resolutions in 2020? Only just over a quarter (26%) kept all of them and nearly half (48%) managed to keep some of them. Whereas 23% failed completely.

The top three resolutions for 2021 were doing more exercise or improving fitness, losing weight, and improving your diet. Health is top of the list when it comes to setting goals as shown on the graph below from the YouGov website.

Why do resolutions fail?

American time management firm Franklin Covey states that one third of resolution makers do not make it past the end of January. Most resolution makers fail because they do not choose the right goals to begin with.

There are three main reasons why your resolutions can fail. One of these is that your resolution is created based on what someone else (or society) is telling you to change. Examples include pressure to stop smoking, drinking or losing weight.  Alternatively, they can be too vague without an end target, and you may not have a realistic plan for achieving your resolution.

What will be on your list for 2022?

Health is clearly a top priority in general so why not join that gym and improve your diet.
