Rise in reported STIs in Sweden

Sweden has been named as Europe’s ‘sex disease capital’, with a far higher number of Swedes seeking out treatment for Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) than their European counterparts. But they should wear this badge with pride.

In recent years, online health clinic HealthExpress has recorded figures which show a significant rise in the number of STIs reported across Europe, but the highest reports were in Sweden, followed by Germany and Britain. The reason? Pelle Ullholm, from the Swedish Association for Sexuality Education, explains:

“An increasing number of young Swedes are aware of the fact that many sexually transmitted diseases don’t have visible symptoms. As a result, they may be more inclined to get tested as a precaution.”

This culture of regular testing should be congratulated, and incorporated into our own lifestyles.
