England has seen a sharp rise in the number of diagnosed sexually transmitted infections (STIs), with diagnoses of Gonorrhoea and Chlamydia the highest on record last year, new figures show.

According to data from the UK’s Health Security Agency (UKHSA), Gonorrhoea diagnoses increased to 82,592 in 2022, up 50.3% from the year before. This is the highest increase in the number of diagnoses since records began in 1918.

Syphilis diagnoses are also significantly up, with the number of infections rising to 8,692 in 2022, the highest rate since 1948.

Chlamydia diagnoses are also up, with 2,195,909 diagnosed cases – a rise of 13% since 2021.

While the rise in diagnoses can be partly explained by a rise in testing, the UKHSA says the increase is most likely due to more frequent transmission of STIs.

People aged 15 to 24 were the age group most likely to be diagnosed with an STI.

STIs a serious public health concern

Though most STIs are easily treated, they can also cause serious health issues.

The UKHSA reminds everyone having sex with new or casual partners “to wear a condom and get tested regularly, whatever their age or sexual orientation.”

Mike Asher, CEO of Better2Know, said of the rise of diagnoses:

“This rise in the number of diagnosed infections shows more than ever why regular, reliable, and affordable testing is vital to maintaining public health. While contraception, like condoms, remains key in preventing the transmission of STIs, regular testing gives people a clear view of their sexual health, and allows them to act accordingly.”
