The Queensland Government Annual Surveillance Report for 2025 reveals that compared with the previous five-year average, new HIV diagnoses increased by 27%, Hepatitis B notifications increased by 25%, Infectious syphilis notifications increased by 23%, Gonorrhoea notifications increased by 13% Hepatitis C notifications remained flat and Chlamydia notifications decreased by 4%. Why can't I get tested right after I have sex?

NAATS (nucleic acid amplification testing) and Serology testing. NAATS is used to correctly identify the infecting organism by isolating its genetic material. This genetic code is unique to every living thing, and is used to identify exactly which organism has infected you. For a NAATS test to be accurate, you have to wait until there are enough organisms in your sample to be analysed.

Serology testing looks for your body's own immune response to an infection. One of the first thing that happens after you get an infection is that your immune system starts to make antibodies against the infection. It is these specific antibodies that are isolated and analysed by Better2Know's Brisbane laboratory.

In both NAATS and Serology testing you need to allow enough time to pass for either the organism to replicate enough or your immune system to start making antibodies.
