HPV is a virus that is usually transmitted sexually, it is well known for causing cervical cancer in women and genital warts in both men and women. Women usually have a test every three years at their GP for pre cancerous cells, but this test (a PAP smear) does not test for the virus – it looks for changes in the cells.
HPV can also cause other types of cancer: anal, penile, throat, tonsils and pharynx (voice box).
